Lean on Me-Cancer through a Carers Eyes, is an inspirational TRUE story of a loving wifes emotional journey as she cares for her dying husband. A Message from Author and Inspirational Speaker Lorraine Kember. Caring for a loved one with cancer can be an overwhelming experience, especially when there is no hope of a cure. Prognosis (estimated time of demise) further intensifies our despair and we begin to grieve in expectation of their death. Anticipatory grief as this is known, causes us to experience much the same symptoms of grief as when a loved one has actually died including: anger, denial, helplessness and despair. In 1999 my beloved husband Brian, was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma (asbestos related cancer) and given a prognosis of three to nine months. Determined to ease his suffering, I put into place a pain and symptom management routine that was to dramatically improve the quality of his life. Insight and discussion on the methods and tools I used to control Brian’s pain and symptoms are included in Lean on Me. As a way of coping with my anticipatory grief I kept a personal diary, pouring my emotions onto the pages often in the form of poetry. Excerpts and poems from my diary form a major part of my book Lean on Me Lean on Me Recommendations Steven Carmody - Hospice Care: Lorraines exploration of her feelings, as she cares for her dying husband Brian, is a revelation. I believe this book is an extraordinary insight into the challenges that confronts ordinary people facing life limiting disease, and would commend it as an excellent grounding resource for health professionals who work alongside those facing terminal illness. Dr Andrew Dean: Consultant Physician in Palliative Care: I believe that this is a truly amazing book that everybody with cancer should read. Any families who have been touched by this disease will undoubtedly find in it inspiration and hope. Roger Woodruff: Director of Palliative Care: This book should have a place on the shelf of any hospice or palliative care service, to be loaned out to the ones who care for our patients and whose struggles and problems are often hidden by those of the patient.
